Error costs PU student 35 marks

Bajinder Pal Singh
CHANDIGARH, July 12: An error in the declaration of result of a PU student cost her 35 marks. Not only that, since the past one year, she has been appealing to the university for rectification of her result. The student who appeared in her B.A. First Year Examination conducted by Punjab University in April 1997 secured 27 marks out of 70 in the theory examination in the subject Functional English. Her score in all other subjects, including compulsory English was good, prompting her to apply for reevaluation. However, when her reevaluation result was not declared in time, she decided to pursue the matter personally.

Repeated enquiries into the reasons for delay in the result revealed another story. The candidate, Chanchal Narang, who is a student of the local SGGS College had secured 62 marks out of 70, and not 27 as mentioned in her result! The error on the part of the university had cost her 35 marks.

Since then she has been writing to the university to declare her result at the earliest. Delay in the declaration of her result of B.A.(I) would also affect her result in second year. The Controller of Examinations when apprised of the case conceded that an error had been committed. He stated that the error had taken place last year, and promised rectification of the result. It is learnt that following detection of the error, the university did pursue the case and initiated steps for correcting the error. However, a correction in the result requires a separate result notification to be issued.
