Spate of robberies in city

NEW DELHI, July 13: There was a spate of robberies and thefts in the Capital during the past 24 hours. At least nine such incidents have reported in the last 24 hours.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested by East district police in connection with a robbery in the Anand Vihar area early this morning.

Police say that four youths broke into a house in Surajmal Vihar early this morning at 4. The youths threatened Hari Kishan Aggarwal, his wife Madhu Aggarwal and their daughter with a knife and locked them up in a room. They then decamped with gold and silver jewellery, Rs 50,000 and gold and silver jewellery.

Later this afternoon, police constables on their beat apprehended Mohammad Munir in the Krishna Nagar area. During his interrogation he confessed that he along with three others - Raju, Thehu and Paua, all of whom are from West Bengal had committed the robbery. He told the police that they had left for Bengal later in the day with part of the loot. Police say that Rs 12,000, jewellery and three watches were recovered from him along with a knife.

A businessman was robbed at knife-point in the Gandhi Nagar police station area last night. Ashok Goba who runs a garment shop in Gandhi Nagar was robbed of his gold chain, ring, wrist watch and Rs 10,600 when he was going to the old Delhi railway station on his two-wheeler. Three youths on a scooter first overtook him and robbed him of the valuables. Gandhi Nagar police have registered a case of robbery.

Armed men robbed a motorist of his gold chain and Rs 4,500 in the Tilak Marg area. A resident of Loni, Ashok Sen, was returning home when five youths in two scooters stopped his car. When he protested, the accused attacked him with a knife and he reportedly received minor injuries. The robbers even took his car keys leaving him stranded on the road. A scooterist who tried to help him was also robbed of Rs 1,500.

Some youths snatched a purse from a man on the Nizamuddin bridge who was reportedly going to Connaught Place.

Another robbery was reported from Lajpat Nagar. Four youths, Rohit, Jagbir, Balbir and Gagan, were robbed of a watch and Rs 500 when they were going home in a TSR after watching last night's show at Alankar cinema. Five assailants in another TSR reportedly overtook them and stopped their TSR. The accused demanded whatever cash and valuables they had.

In another case, a resident of Govindpuri extension in Kalkaji was robbed of his gold chain, watch and his wallet containing Rs 200 late last night.
