Railway employee leaves behind four letters, many questions

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, July 16: The mystery behind the suicide of railway employee Bharathi Bhanshali is deepening. Four letters recovered by Agripada police indicate that Bharathi, who jumped to death from the terrace of Western Railway Divisional Office at Bombay Central along with her three-year-old daughter on Tuesday afternoon, had decided only during the last few hours to kill the girl.

In one of the four letters, written only a few days before she took the fatal leap, Bharathi had sought the transfer of all her savings in her daughter Priyanka's name. However, she changed her mind a few days later and decided that savings should go to her brother, Vipin, in whose name she left the suicide note too.

Police believe that Priyanka's mother was convinced that the girl would not be cared for well after her death. This probably led her to push the girl down the six-storeyed building ahead of herself. But, it is quite clear that Bharathi was confused and was having difficulty in deciding her daughter's fate till thelast moment. In the last two letters addressed to `police saheb' she says that nobody should be held responsible for her death. All the letters are in Gujarati and do not even once mention her husband, Chandreshbhai Ramnikbhai Bhanshali. But police are not yet willing to say anything. Meanwhile, they have recorded statements of the family members and some close friends. Bharathi,35, was a head clerk in the Establishment Branch at the Divisional Office working on the ground floor.
