Jayalalitha case hearing adjourned to July 28

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CHENNAI, July 17: A division bench of the Madras High Court today adjourned to July 28 further hearing of writ petitions by former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha and others challenging the validity of appointment of three special judges to try corruption cases against them.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice M S Liberhan and Justice E Padmanabhan, fixed the date for the next hearing after senior counsel for Jayalalitha Rajeev Dhavan, requested the adjournment on the ground that he was slated to leave for South Africa on July 20 to attend a meeting of the International Commission of Jurists, of which he is a member.

Counsel for the Union and State governments strongly opposed the adjournment on the ground that a time frame for hearing the petitions had already been fixed by the court. Besides, it would upset the schedule of senior counsel from Delhi who are to appear on behalf of the prosecution, it was contended.
