CHENNAI, July 17: Top-seeded and former World junior runner-up Aparna Popat survived a first game loss, but found her touch in time to win the ladies singles title in the Asian Satellite Badminton Tournament here today. In an absorbing final, Aparna defeated her fellow compatriot and fourth seeded Neelima Choudhry 6-11, 11-6, 11-8.
Down by a game in which Neelima outplayed her famed rival, Aparna played with aplomb from the second game. She found her length with telling smashes and raced to a 10-3 lead. But she dropped three game points in a row missing her returns. However, she wrapped up the game 11-6 with a forehand smash.
In the decider too Aparna was in control having gained a 4-0 lead. Neelima levelled 4-4 and again Aparna went up 8-4. But Neelima upset her concentration to level 8-8.
Aparna won three points in a row and romped home with the title. Aparna had also beaten Neelima in the final of the Colombo leg recently.
The top-seeded Malaysian pair of Chan Chongn Meng and Geremy Gan, Worldjunior champions in 1996 and the Asian junior champions last year, predictably won the men's doubles title.

Vincent and Ismail drew level 8-8 and again 12-12 and went on to lead 14-12, down 11-8. Chan and Geremy however, drew level 14 -14 as the Indian pair lost their nerve and dropped a game point. They went on the win up 16-15 after dropping a match point failing to retrieve a smash by Ismail.
In an all Indian affair, the National champions, Madhumita Bisht and PVV Lakshmi, the top seeds, won the ladies doubles title. But they were stretched to three games by the second-seeded Manjusha Kanwar and Archana Deodhar who won the first game. Madhumita and Lakshmi won 6-15, 15-3, 15-9.
