Big wins for TN, IHF Colts

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
CHENNAI, July 17: It was virtually a goal glut on the second day of the 76th MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup All India Hockey Tournament as strong contenders Tamil Nadu and IHF Colts XI scoring runaway wins over their respective rivals here today.

While Tamil Nadu scored at will to pound Food Corporation of India 6-0 after leading 5-0 in the first half, IHF Colts indulged in target practice as they pulverised Bihar by five goals without reply.

In the other match, Servcies, who lost to Mumbai yesterday, dished out an improved show to put it across Gujarat by two second half goals to gain full points.

Tamil Nadu meant business right from the push off. Junior internationals Tirumalvalavan and Prabhakar formed a deadly combination along with Deivasagayam Felix and wrought havoc with the hapless Bihar defence.

The moment Devasagayam Felix opened the account in the 13th minute, the floodgates were opened. L Prabhakar had a field day scoring thrice (second, fourth and sixth) goals and Tirumalvalavan scored the thirdand fifth goal.

Prabhakar made it 2-0 in the 17th and Tirumalavalan scored his first goal three minutes later to make it 3-0. The duo scored one more goal each in the next five minutes as the teams switched over to the second half with Tamil Nadu leading 5-0.

Prabhakar slotted his third goal in the opening minute, to be precise 28 seconds into the second half, to make it 6-0.

Earlier, IHF Colts came back on their own scoring five goals in the second half after leading by Bikrampal Singh's 32nd minute goal in the first half. Bikrampal Singh scored again in the 44th minute and Syed Irshad Ali converted a penalty stroke in the 48th minute. The stroke was awarded after Vipin Fernandez was obstructed by a defender inside the circle. Mangra Munda made it 4-0 in the 56th minute and Gurjaat Singh scored the fifth goal three minutes later to complete the rout.

In another match Services scored in the 48th and 66th minute through K Horo and Paramjit Singh to defeat Gujarat after a barren first half.
