MUMBAI, July 17: Mahindras were lucky to get away with three points against a spirited Central Bank of India after a 1-0 victory in a Gulf Lubricant WIFA Super Division League football match at the Cooperage here this evening. The bankmen deserved at least a point after putting in a composed display and were unlucky to suffer a second straight defeat -- they lost 0-1 after conceding a last-gasp penalty against BMFC in their last match.
Sushanta Mazumdar snatched today's all-important goal off a melee in the 39th minute following a corner-kick. Mazumdar's header was thwarted by CBI 'keeper Jerome Ghanekar but the Mahindras captain was successful in putting the ball in the net.
Mahindras could well have taken lead two minute before they got the match winner. Medio Khalid Siddique's 30 yards left foot shot struck the post and came back into play. Striker Manjit Singh who was waiting for the rebound was slow to react.
The bankmen were kept at bay by some excellent play by goalkeeper Mark Mascarenhas. ButMahindras also had opportunities -- Satish Minz and Harish Sharma going close with long rangers in the second half.
