MUMBAI, July 17: The weaknesses of Mumbai police and the pressures under which it works was under focus at a seminar organised by the Mid-Day group of papers on Thursday on ``What are Mumbai's expectations from the police force and why are these hopes belied''?The seminar was attended by the Mid-Day editor, Ayaz Memon, former director general of police, D S Soman, police commissioner, R H Mendonca, media personality, Amit Khanna.
Addressing the audience of over a 100 including the three joint commissioners of police, D Shivanandan, T K Choudhary and P S Pasricha, the four speakers forcefully presented their views and opinions. Amit Khanna said that the people had lost confidence in the police. The view was seconded by Soman who said, ``The government itself does not have confidence in the police force.'' Mendonca was at pains to explain how a force of 35,000 personnel fights against great odds to police a population of 14 million.
