Chandigarh to give matching grant to COA

CHANDIGARH, July 17: The Chandigarh Olympic Association has decided to organise coaching camps for the Union Territory sportspersons in the first week of September in preparation for the V National Games to be held in Manipur from October 4 to 14.

Giving this information to newsmen here today, COA secretary K S Sahota said that ``primarily it will be the responsibility of the respective state associations to conduct the coaching camps.

However, the COA will suervise the coaching programme.''

The COA secretary said that `random survey by the apex sports body of the Union Territory will be done to check the progress of the coaching camps. It has warned that any association found guilty of including `outsiders' in the contingent would be face stern action. Physical attendance of all the sportspersons invited to the coaching camp will be compulsory.

The second and final camp will be held in the last week of September. Sahota has asked the associations to start preparing the teams by holding coaching camps which have been `sanctioned' by the Chandigarh Sports Department. The COA has also asked the associations to finalise the names of the players latest by August 15.

The last date of sending the names and their bio-data to the Manipur National Games Organising Committee is August 20.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Sports Department has denied having sanctioned any coaching camp in preparation for the Manipur National Games. Denying received any communication from the COA, a Sports Department spokesman clarified that ``it has been proposed that the COA would meet 50 per cent cost of the coaching camps for any National Games.

The Chandigarh Administration would give the matching grant to the COA for sending the Union Territory squad to Manipur.''

According to the tentative programme drawn up by the Organising Committee of the Manipur National Games, 191-member Chandigarh contingent would report at Imphal on September 30.

The organising committee would ply 46 buses daily from Guwahati to Imphal for the state teams. Tight security would be provided to the players and officials during the journey and the competitions. According to a rough estimates more than 9,000 sportspersons and 1,000 technical officials from all over the country will take part in the games.

More than 1000 mediapersons are expected to be covering the events for their respective newspapers and news agencies.

According to information received here, round-the-clock work is going on to complete the 20,000 seating capacity main stadia. More than 75 per cent work has been already completed at other venues.

All India Women Hockey Federation has informed the Chandigarh Women Hockey Association that `Union Territory have qualified for the Manipur National Games.''

According to the list released by the COA, 121 men and 46 women have been included in the Chandigarh team for the Manipur Games. The is list `provisional' and subject to change as the details are sitll to be finalised.

Chandigarh will take part in arhcery, athletics, boxing, canoeing and kayaking, fencing, gymnastics, women's hockey, judo, rowing, shooting, swimming, taekwondo, lawn tennis, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling.
