Pak charges of Indo-Israel tie-up false: US envoy

Kamal Siddiqi
ISLAMABAD, July 19: Outgoing American Ambassador to Pakistan, Thomas Simons, has denied reports that Israeli F-16's were on their way to attack Pakistan before Islamabad detonated its nuclear devices and said that the Pakistan government had taken its decision to detonate based on false information.

In an interview with Dawn, a leading Karachi-based English daily, Simons said that the general feeling regarding possible Israeli attacks, ``played into Pakistan's decision to test''. The US envoy, however, clarified that the report was false. ``The idea that the US was colluding in Indian tests because we didn't catch them before hand, is all false,'' he said.

Simons said that the American government was aware that this was false information and conveyed this feeling to the Pakistani government. ``We knew it was false and told the (Pakistan) government but it still continued to be carried away. Such a country is a worrisome country,'' he said.
