MUMBAI, July 19: Officers of the Mumbai police's Narcotics Cell were recently pulled up by the Sessions Court for dereliction of duty while investigating a narcotics case.Special judge dealing in NDPS cases, K U Chandiwal, acquitted the accused in the case, Siraj Ahmed alias Munna Jamil Ahmed Khan. Inspector S Babar received a tip-off that a person was scheduled to land up atDharavi, for delivery of fire arms to one of his associates on December 9, 1997, said the police. A trap was laid, but instead of fire arms, 2.5 kilograms of hashish was seized.
The case was then transferred to the Narcotics Cell for further investigations. However, counsel for the accused, Ayaz Khan, said the accused was picked up on December 6 by the officers and detained on false grounds. The main accused were released. The judge came down heavily on officers for making no efforts to collect sample packets containing the drug from the chemical analyser and placing them before the court.
