Highways claim 4, injure 14

PUNE, July 19: Four persons were killed and 14 injured in two separate mishaps on the Pune-Mumbai and the Pune-Nashik Highway stretches last evening.

In a bizarre mishap at Waksai phata near Lonavla, three persons were killed while 10 others were injured. A jeep, a tempo and a scooter were involved in the mishap that occurred around 6 pm.

The jeep which was carrying passengers to Mumbai first hit the door of a tempo coming from opposite direction. While the tempo moved further, the jeep driver lost control over the vehicle and dashed against the scooter which was following the tempo. The scooterist and his pillion died on the spot. The victims were identified as Pandurang Mahipat Shinde (30), a resident of Lonavla and Nandu Baliram Balkavade (37), a resident of Tungarli village.

The jeep skidded off the road causing serious injuries to the passengers. The jeep driver Anil Vitthal Wagh (37), a resident of Mumbai, succumbed to injuries while being taken to the hospital.

The injured have been admitted to the rural hospital at Lonavla and at a private hospital in the city.

In another mishap near Bhosari along the Pune-Nashik highway, a jeep driver was killed while four passengers were injured when a truck (MTQ 1600) rammed into it. The mishap occurred at 10.30 pm.

The jeep was taking some passengers when the truck coming from Moshi hit the vehicle. The jeep driver Namdev Bhagwan Lokhande (28), a resident of Chimbli village in Khed taluka died on the spot.

The four injured included Mahesh Mane (27), a resident of Moshi, Tukaram Jagannath Mali, Ratan Gulab Dhulekar, both residents of Pravaranagar, and Narayan Govind Kalkhe (72) a resident of Chakan. The truck driver sped away after the mishap. The Bhosari police is investigating.
