CHANDIGARH, July 24: The Chandigarh Education Department has introduced archery in school games from this year. Giving this information here today, Brahmjit Kalia, District Education Officer, said that the inaugural Chandigarh Schools Archery Championships for boys and girls will be held in August. The dates will be finalised by sports secretaries Gulzar Singh (boys) and Joginder Kaur Sandhu (girls).Besides, the archery competitions, the Education Department would also conduct competitions in wrestling (boys), gymnastics, swimming and judo (boys and girls) in under-19, under-17 and under-14 categories. Last date of entry for wrestling, gymnastics, swimming, judo and archery is July 18.
The Pre-Nehru hockey for boys and girls under-17 and under-15, lawn tennis, badminton, table tennis for under-19, under-17 and under-14 and ball badminton and softball boys and girls under-19 will be conducted in September. Last date of entry is Septemebr 19.
In October, competitions would be organised in basketball, handball, hockey, kabaddi for boys and girls under-19, u-17 and u-14, football for boys and girls (u-19) and under-17 and u-14 (boys), volleyball, kho-kho (boys and girls) under19, u-17, u-14.
DEO Kalia said the Education Department would fullfil its commitment to conduct the National School Games in basketball and handball for boys and girls under-17 and hockey for boys under-19 in November. Besides the National School Games, the Chandigarh School cricket tournament for boys under-19, u-16, u-14 and for girls under-19 and the primary school games will be hosted in November.
The students will be free from sports activities after school athletic championships in December. However the dates of any event are subject to changes in case of clash of dates with the School Games of India's programme.
