Disinvestment of BRPL opposed

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
GUWAHATI, July 26: The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has warned the centre against further disinvestment of Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (BRPL) and threatened agitation if disinvestment continues.

AASU president Sarbananda Sonowal and general secretary Samujjal Bhattacharya, in a release, today said they were "surprised that a government having swadeshi as their keyword has agreed to privatise a profit making public sector undertaking for no reason whatsoever".

BRPL's performance had been rated as "excellent'' by the centre for the last five consecutive years, the release said. AASU said during 1992-94, the centre disinvested 25.54 per cent shares of BRPL at total consideration value of about Rs 169 crore mainly to financial institutions.
