Wasim Jaffer sets a new mark in Bradford League

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, July 28: Mumbai opening batsman Wasim Jaffer is creating ripples in the Minor Counties in Yorkshire, England according to reports reaching here. The 20-year-old Jaffer has been one of the key figures in Spen Victoria's impressive run in the Bradford League.

Jaffer stamped his class with a whirlwind 180 (162b, 21x4, 5x6) against defending champions Baildon in May last. During this knock, Jaffer and his opening partner Andy Bethel (unbeaten 107) were instrumental in setting a record 277-run stand, which was the highest in the competition's 95-year history. They archived the previous best set by Pudsey St Lawrence openers James Dracup and Russell Gaunt in 1987 by five runs.

Interestingly, Jaffer's magnificent innings was the highest individual score in Division One for five years.

Spen Victoria rode on the opening pair's display to amass the first 300 plus score this season as they made 309-1 in 50 overs.

Jaffer and Bethel extended their batting elegance to the Heavy Woollen Cup. In the40-overs-a-side semi-finals, the duo raked up 175 runs without getting separated to script a 10-wicket victory. While Jaffer cracked 102 (14x4, 2x6), Bethel compiled 62.
