Mahidharpura PI transferred

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, July 28: Even as the city police are yet to make any arrests in the daylight loot and murder of flour merchant Arvindbhai Chokshi yesterday at Ghachi Sheri, PI S B Rawat of the Mahidharpura police station was transferred and replaced by PI Noel Parmar of the Umra police station.

The decision to transfer Rawat was taken at midnight, on Monday, after top police officials met to assess the situation in the area, which has witnessed a spurt in crime in the past two months.

Talking to Express Newsline, PI Noel Parmar said, ``I have just taken charge from today afternoon and am going through the pending cases.'' He assured he would take steps to contain crime in the area.

On whether the arrest of Dharmendra Punjabi, an extortionist, while he was PI of Umra, was the reason for his transfer, Parmar replied in the negative. ``Give me 24 hours before I can answer any questions related to the Mahidharpura police station,'' he said, when asked if there were any chances of the culprits being nabbed.

Meanwhile, Dipakkumar Jaikishan Gajjar who was also shot at by the assailants was discharged from the Maskati hospital, after being operated upon for removal of a bullet from his shoulder.
