St Andrew's boys reap rich harvest, Remedy girls top

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI Aug 3: St Andrews Junior College (Bandra) boys and Our Lady of Remedy High School (Kandivili) girls claimed top honours in the Multi-Games Sports Councils under-19 Suburban District Football Championship here today.

In one-sided summit clashes at the St Francis D'Assisi ground, Borivli, St Andrews routed Bombay Suburban Grain Dealers Associations (BSGD) Junior College, Malad 6-1 while Our Lady of Remedy drubbed St Andrews Junior College 4-0.

St Andrews striker Rohan Salian celebrated his birthday in style with four goals including a hat-trick to guide his side to a resounding victory.

The slushy conditions failed to impede Salian and joining the party were Clayton Periera and Jarzinho Siero who netted a goal each for the winners who led 2-0 at half-time. The goal-scoring trio underlined their dominance by repeatedly punching holes in the rival defence after resumption.

Amit Jhaveri brought some consolation for BSGD finding the target in the 39th minute off an indirect free-kick.

It wasPereira, who clinched the initiative for St Andrews with an 8th minute strike following a goal-mouth melee before Salian took charge in the 50-minute duel (15th, 32nd, 37th and 48th minutes). Siero stamped the teams seal of supremacy in style two minutes before close, blasting a right-footer from the top of the box that struck the bar and cannoned into the net.

St Andrews has had an impressive outing having conceded just one goal, that too in the final.

Manasi Surve led the honours for Our Lady of Remedy with two goals (13th and 45th minutes). Loraine D'Souza, who converted a penalty in the 37th minute and Divya Kaur (40th minute) were the other goal-getters. The winners led 1-0 at the breather.

Had it not been for some fine reflexes shown by St Andrews goalkeeper Deborah Fernandes, Our Lady of Remedy would have been victors by a much bigger margin. The plump Deborah not only blocked Surve's spot-kick, awarded after Jol Misquitta handled the ball in the danger zone, but also came in the way of a coupleof goal-bound moves.

The suburban titlists now proceed to play the Mumbai City champions for divisional honours.

Big win for Campion

Campion School registered a convincing 5-0 win over St Michaels, Mahim in a under-15 Division II B league match of the Colgate-Palmolive Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) Inter-Schools Tournament at the St Xaviers ground, Parel today.

Rajpal Suhail, Zarir Khambatta, Joshua Dumasia, Anuj Goel and Varun Tolani were the scorers for the winners.

Naved Ansari's brace saw Anjuman Allana down Robert Money in a Div III F league match.

Earlier on Sunday, St Francis D'Assisi, Borivli rode on Adam Alfonso's striking prowess (four goals including a hat-trick) to upstage Our Lady of Remedy 5-1.

Greydon Murzello was the other scorer for the D'Assisi.

Durai Alexander landed the consolation goal for Our Lady.
