NEW DELHI, AUG 3: A dismal performance from corporate India has taken its toll on the stock prices. A number of stocks in BSE's A group have plunged to their decade lows, thanks to the fluid political situation, tension on the border areas and weak Asian markets.Tisco's stock dipped below the Rs 100 level after a gap of eight years. Besides, IDBI, IPCL and ITC Hotels have been tumbling to their new all-time lows. Out of the 100 group A scrips, 27 scrips are today either trading at their five year lows or more. As many as eight scrips in the group A are lying at their decade lows and another nine are at their eight-year lows and three at their seven-year low.
Ashok Leyland, Bombay Dyeing, Ceat Limited, Century Textiles, Gujarat Alkalies, Hindustan Motors, ITC Bhadrachalam and SKF Bearings have reached their decade lows.
Led by the recessionary trend in the commercial vehicle segment, Ashok Leyland, Telco and Hindustan Motors stocks have been hammered in the past few sessions. However, scrips like HeroHonda, TVS Suzuki and Bajaj Auto have weathered the storm and have done reasonably well following encouraging performance.
This is the second time in the last six months that scrips of top corporates have crashed to lows which had not been seen in many years. In January this year, the scrips breached their lows along with the Sensex crashing to around 3200 points. Although the Sensex after recovering to 4200 level in June again crashed to around 3000 level, but the drop in individual scrip this time around has been much sharper.
Led by the Tata group's flagship, Tisco has plunged below the Rs 100 level after a gap of more than eight years. Tisco's scrip has been testing the Rs 100 level during the past week, but it finally closed at Rs 99.35 on Monday, after touching the days low of Rs 98.60 on the National Stock Exchange. The last time Tisco's scrip was below Rs 100 was way back in February 1990. Tisco's scrip, following its dismal performance has lost Rs 30 from Rs 130 to the current level in the pastten trading sessions. Tisco reported a sharp drop in net profit of 60 per cent to Rs 277 crore in the first quarter.
Among the other Tata group companies, Tata Chemicals, Tata Power and Titan too have dropped to their lows. Titan after breaking its ties with Timex has been on the slide and after a dismal financial performance has dropped to its eight-year low of Rs 38.
With no encouraging signs emerging from the paper sector, stocks of ITC Bhadrachalam Paper and Ballarpur Industries have plunged to low levels, ITC Bhadras stock at Rs 22 is well below its decade ago price of Rs 42. Ballarpur too is well below its 1990 price of Rs 125. Similarly, the hotel stocks, a one-time favourite of fund mangers are not finding support from the operators these days, EIH Limited has dropped to its five-year low of Rs 204. ITC Hotels has dropped to its all-time low of Rs 80 and Indian Hotels too has been seeking lower levels. Bombay Dyeing's scrip was last quoted around Rs 58 a decade ago. The scrip has yet again droppedto that level. Analyst expect the Sensex to touch the 2750-2800 level and in that case, these stocks are sure to hit their historic lows.
