Youth leaps from Mantralaya bldg

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, August 3: A 22-year-old wrestler from Pune broke his legs today when he jumped from the Mantralaya building in an apparent attempt to end his life. Nitin Dhondiba Rode, a resident of Patilnagar at post Chikhali, Haveli taluka, is undergoing treatment the St George's Hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

Though nobody saw Rode taking the plunge, police said his injuries indicated he jumped from the third floor. Apart from fractured legs, Rode has a deep gash in the head. Rode jumped from the corridor joining the original Mantralaya building and the annexe at around 2.40 pm.

Till reports last came in, he was still unconscious and the police had no clue as to what prompted him to take the extreme step.

However, a senior officer attached to the Mantralaya security said: ``It seems that he was in desperate need of a job. He must have come to Mantralaya like several other unemployed youths in search of a job or some other help. Not getting a favourable reply, he attempted to end his life.'' Police havemanaged to trace Rode's suitcase and have found certificates showing he had participated in several state-level wrestling tournaments. His name was also found registered in the entry book at one of the Mantralaya gates. Investigations revealed that he is in Mumbai alone.

Zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police K L Bishnoi visited the spot later in the day and the case is now being investigated by the Cuffe Parade police.
