Tree guards to be bought

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Aug 3: VMC commissioner G R Aloria has sent for approval of the civic Standing Committee a scheme to purchase some 12,000 tree-guards at an estimated expenditure of Rs 36.36 lakh under the Green Vadodara Scheme. The proposal will be taken up at the Standing Committee meeting scheduled for Thursday.

Accordingly, about 5,000 guards will be distributed to 80 housing societies while 2,000 will be given to non-government organisations and corporates to put up around trees they plant on the roads and public places. The rest will be installed by the VMC.

Civic guest house: The Standing Committee of the VMC will take up on Thursday a proposal by the Municipal Commissioner to hand over the Pravasi Gruh (tourist guest house) owned by the VMC to the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training free of cost.

Encroachment removed: The anti-encroachment squad of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation on Monday removed illegal construction from a housing society in Mehsana Nagar in Nizampura as well as removed stalls, kiosks and larri-galla near Chhani octroi post, Fatehganj and GEDA Circle, according to an official statement.

Congress demand: Congress leader in the VMC Kanchan Parmar and others reiterated their demand to continue the VMC's share in the Panam water project on river Mahi.

They alleged that the ruling party in the VMC and the State were trying to dilly-dally a decision to overturn the RJP government's action of discontinuing the VMC's 25 per cent share in the Panam dam project.

In a press statement, they demanded the Government should take a decision on this and reminded that the Municipal Commissioner too had written to the State Government for the purpose.
