Torian shows his class
Reggie Torian doesn't have the international titles and achievements that belong to hurdling rivals Allen Johnson, Colin Jackson and Mark Crear. But he showed on Sunday why he could be joining them in 1999. Torian beat all three to become the fastest in the world this year over 110 metres.

El Kaouch wins
Adil El Kaouch broke the Kenyan strangle hold on the men's distance events here today, winning Morocco's first ever gold at the World Junior Championships when he triumphed in the 1,500 metres. The championships also ended with the unlikely result of the American men returning without a gold medal as Australia's 4x400 metres team imposed the first ever defeat on the United States in the event since the championships began in 1986.

Malaysian Open
Six Indian women golfers would participate in the Malaysian Open (amateur) golf championship, starting tomorrow. India has fielded two teams of three players each for this prestigious tournament at the Awana Golf and Country Club in Jenting highlands in Malaysia, which will conclude on August 6.

Aarthi firm
Asian sub-junior girls champion Aarthi Ramaswamy (7) of Tamil Nadu was assured of the title with a round to spare after taking a full one point lead on the eighth and penultimate round of the eighth National u-18 chess championship today.

Wills takes over
First came the Omega Asian Professional Golf Association Tour at the continental level, and now the Wills Tour on the national level. The Professional Golf Association of India today extended the idea by announcing Wills Sport, as the umbrella sponsor for the tour on the lines of the better known Omega Tour in Asia and the Nike Tour in United States.
