I will step down if J&K killings continue: Advani

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, August 4: Home Minister L K Advani today said that he would not hesitate to step down as minister if there was no headway in the fight against militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.

``I will abide by what I said in Doda if the government fails to control the situation (in Jammu and Kashmir),'' Advani said, when agitated Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha drew his attention to a statement made by him in Doda recently. A government which could not protect its citizens had no right to exist, he had said.

Advani was clarifying his statement on the massacre of 35 persons in Chamba yesterday. Some agitated members demanded the resignation of the home minister in the wake of the spate of massacres of innocent civilians.

The Opposition members accused the government and the home minister in particular of failing to check the upsurge of militancy in the Kashmir Valley. They turned down a request by Advani to go to the Lok Sabha to move a bill, asking him to be present in the House while the discussion wason.

The minister reiterated the government's commitment to crush the proxy war by Pakistan in J&K. He said that the killing of innocent persons should not be politicised and called for an all-party meet after the session to discuss terrorism and ISI-sponsored activities across the country.
