She lost to unseeded, Ekta Bhambri of Delhi in an exciting five-setter. Bhambri lost the first two games 11-21, 19-21 but fought back to sweep the next three games at 21-18, 21-17, 21-19.

The men's singles first round was devoid of upsets and the seeded players easily coasted into the second round.

Though no player from the host state Gujarat qualified for the main draw, Chirag Channa and Malay Thakkar, who were entered directly in the main draw, kept the state's hopes alive by winning their first round matches.

Chirag Channa beat Pankaj Sharma (ESCB) 21-11, 21-13, 21-13 while Malay Thakkar downed CR Anand (UBI) 21-10, 21-13, 21-8.
