Pak firing kills five jawans

SRINAGAR: Five securitymen were killed and 19 wounded when Pakistani troops fired mortar and artillery shells on Indian positions in Jammu and Kashmir for the seventh consecutive day on Wednesday, raising the death toll to 47. Two persons were injured in Pakistan shelling at Machil sector of Kupwara today and nine civilians were wounded when shells hit their houses at Paranda village of Karnal sector of Kupwara district Three more persons were injured in Pakistani troops firing in Uri sector.

Massive I-T raids

MUMBAI: In perhaps the biggest haul in the year for the Investigation Wing of the Income Tax department here, countrywide raids on a shipping agents' and customs house agents' syndicate yielded an admission of concealment of income worth Rs 14.88 crore. It was reliably learnt from trade sources that Ganesh Containers, the Orient Group and Chandan brothers of the Mathuradas Group were raided.

Mizoram bandh

AIZAWL: A 12-hour bandh crippled lifein Mizoram today as shops, business establishments, banks, government offices, and educational institutions were closed throughout the state. The bandh, called by the Mizo National Youth Front, evoked total response. No untoward incident was reported from anywhere. The capital and other towns like Lunglei, Champhai, Mamit, and Kolasib wore a deserted look. Vehicles were off the road. The bandh was in protest against the State Government's alleged failure in financial management.
