Student consumer camp organised

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Aug 5: A student Consumer Protection Training Camp was organised at the Maharani Girls High School here on Monday by city-based organisation Jagrut Grahak to create awareness among students about their rights as consumers.

Addressing the 37 participants in the workshop, Assistant Director, Weights and Measures Department, G R Chauhan said, ``It is very essential that students be on the guard against the corrupt practices in the society. They must shield against deception and injustice if these have to be rooted out from the social system.''

Chauhan demonstrated to the students how they could be cheated by unscrupulous dealers when they go shopping. He also explained ways to detect faults in the weighing machines and measures.

Giving a lecture on `Food Adulteration and Students' Awareness', Display Officer R K Jade of the Food and Drugs Laboratory explained to the students how food articles could be adulterated and what health hazards they posed to the consumer.

``Despite the efforts to check adulteration of food articles, traders are minting money by continuing with the illegal practice simply because the consumer lacks awareness about such activities. Therefore, it is essential that the consumer be informed about ways to detect adulteration,'' he said.

Jade spoke at length about adulteration through artificial colours used in food products, silver foil used on sweetmeats, saccharine, impure water and other edible items which could cause severe harm to the health of the consumer.

The camp was inaugurated by Jagrut Grahak Secretary Indubhai Shelat and chaired by trustee Jayantbhai Shukla.
