Call to freeze sugar imports, new units
Federation of Indian Sugar Factories chairman Shivaji Giridhar Patil has charged that the Centre's sugar import policy has left sugar factories saddled with 53 lakh tonnes of excess sugar in their godowns and that the Prime Minister's directive to purchase 12 lakh tonne sugar from them has not eased the situation.

US-Pak military exercise put off
The United States has decided to postpone indefinitely the joint military exercises with Pakistan unless Islamabad accepts the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and commits itself to halt fissile material production, reports Defense News.

Devotees pay last tribute to Swami
Amidst chanting of Vedic hymns and `Hari Om Ramakrishna', the mortal remains of Swami Bhuteshananda, the twelfth president of Ramakrishna Mission and Math who died here yesterday, was consigned to flames on Tuesday. Lakhs of devotees gathered to pay their last tribute to Swami Bhuteshananda.
