Minority panel should take note of torture of Hindu women - BJP

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
SURAT, Aug 12: The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress along with about 29 minority organisations and individuals submitted their memorandums to the five-member National Minority Commission who were in Surat on Tuesday to inquire into the alleged cases of harassment and intimidation of minority communities in the State.

BJP members led by city unit president Pravin Naik in a memorandum submitted to the Commission have informed that atrocities on Hindu women were taking place in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Mizoram and other places. They wanted to know why the Commission never visited these places. A copy of the memorandum was also given to the press.

They also submitted a list of alleged elopements, rapes on Hindu girls, forced marriages, atrocities by minorities on Harijans and the press clippings of unlawful activities by minorities. They also named some Muslim Congress leaders and their alleged involvement in handling of RDX, hand grenade and AK-47 cases saying that when the VHP and the Bajrang Dalraise their voices against unlawful activities of these minority elements, they were being stamped as facist.

City Congress chief Thakorebhai Naik, in a statement to the Commission said, that since the BJP coming the power in the State, its allied groups have tried to play with the sentiments and lives of people. The memorandum further said that the allied groups of the ruling party cannot be allowed to take law into their hands and the government should take steps to ensure a safe and peaceful life for the minority communities. Principal of St Xavier School Father John Kappa said in his memorandum that the present government was instilling a sense of insecurity among Muslims and Christians.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, in their submission, gave a list of atrocities on minorities throughout the State and said they were on a rise after the BJP government took charge, both at the Centre and in the State.

The movement for secular democracy, in their memorandum said that religion should not be used as a toolby the political parties to misguide and misdirect people's attention from the basic problems of poverty, unemployment and inequality. They said that the government should not do anything that directly or indirectly interferes with the human rights guaranteed in the Indian constitution.

In Rajkot, two NCM members listened to six delegations and received representations from others about a particular incident involving a missionary school and some outsiders who allegedly ransacked the school building and damaged some holy books.

The Commission in Rajkot had a hectic schedule, listening to representatives from various political and social groups at the Circuit House. After finishing with the hearing, the team leader Dr James Massey told newsmen that the report will be complied with all the facts gathered so far and will be submitted to the Centre through the Commission by the end of the month.

Those deposed before the Commission included former Gujarat minister and Congress leader Manoharsinh Jadeja andBJP representatives and general secretary of the Gujarat BJP Vijay Rupani. A section of the minority community who were unheard by the Commission members, assembled in the Circuit House compound and shouted slogans like ``Minority Commission murdabad and Minority Commission vapas jao''.
