Maharashtra's pledge to fishermen
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Aug 12: The Maharashtra Government today accepted the demands of the Fishermen Action Committee and promised to attend to the teething problems of fishermen in the state. The government's decision has been taken in response to the massive protest march by the state's fishermen here recently.Revenues and Fisheries Minister Narayan Rane agreed to speed up matters pertaining to the proposed port at Wadhvan besides others sops like exemption in sales tax for fishing co-operative societies, financial assistance to individual fishermen during monsoon, distribution of monthly diesel quota and construction of small fish landing jetties along the coastline. Since fishing comes to a standstill for four months during monsoon, the committee had earlier demanded the state government to provide financial assistance to the fishermen on the lines of a similar scheme by the Union Government.
