Kulkarni shocks third seed Tawade

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Aug 12: Ahmednagar's Rutupurna Kulkarni caused a major upset in the State Selection Badminton championships at the PJ Hindu Gymkhana by knocking out third seed Mayur Tawade 12-15, 15-8, 15-3 in the men's singles quarter-finals here today.

Rutupurna, the seventh seed, had a good chance to close out the match in two games but he blew a 9-1 advantage in the first game and let Tawade win the it 15-12. Rutupurna thereafter had the match under control as Tawade looked unusually ragged, committing many errors and looking increasingly tired. In fact, in the decider, after the players changed courts with Rutupurna leading 8-5, Tawade conceded all the remaining points through unforced errors.

In another minor upset, fifth seed Nimish Goyal won in three games against fourth seed Sanket Shetty 12-15, 15-9, 15-5. Shetty clearly didn't look like making a comeback after losing the second game because in the third game he seemed jaded and played many careless shots.

Top Seed Rajeev Bagga did not look interestedin his match until the sixth seed Arindam Roy Choudhary took a 11-1 lead in the first game. Then he reeled off 11 straight points before losing the game 15-12. He won the next two 15-7, 15-8 with customary ease. He meets Goyal while Rutupurna clashes with second seed Vikrant Patwardhan in the semi-finals.

Vikrant's pace and power was too much for eighth seed Alok Singh, who lost the first game 15-4 in a jiffy. He put up a better fight in the second but Vikrant was too good for him.

Tawade had a bad day as he lost in the doubles quarter-finals too. He and Hemant Hardikar, the second seeds, lost to Kunal Waswani and Amogh Kulkarni 15-8, 15-12.

In the women's singles semi-finals clash, top seed Trupti Murgunde will clash with Sim Sim Salaria while second seed Nazneen Karimi meets Meenakshi Wagh.
