Sydenham, Acharya joint leaders

MUMBAI, Aug 12: Sydenham and Acharya Marathe are the joint leaders after two rounds in the Group A of the Inter-Collegiate Chess Championships being held at the University Pavilion here today.

Both have seven points each. While Sydenham defeated Raheja 3-1, Acharya Marathe won 4-0 against Khalsa.

RD Nationals and Vivekanand Technical are in the second spot with 6.5 points each. They beat Ruia and Ruparel respectively with an identical margin of 2.5-1.5.

Defending champions, Podar were surprisingly held to a 2-2 draw by HR Commerce andpoints with six others. In group B, eight colleges share the lead after one round with four points each. And these eight include hot favourites, Mulund College of Commerce. They defeated ASC Panvel 4-0 today.

After seven rounds, four team from each group will qualify.

IMPORTANT RESULTS

A Group (2nd round): Sydenham (7) bt Raheja (5) 3-1; RD Nationals (6.5) beat Ruia (5.5) 2.5-1.5; Ruparel (5.5) lost to VES Institute Technical (6.5) 1.5-2.5; Khalsa (4)lost to Acharya Marathe (7) 0-4; RA Podar (5.5) drew with HR Commerce (5.5) 2-2.
Group B (1st round): ASC Panvel (0) lost to Mulund College of Commerce 0-4; Vaze (2) drew with Ismail Yusuf 2-2; Pillai Arch (3) bt MMK (1) 3-1; CHM (2.5) bt Vivek (1.5) 2.5-1.5; MLDC (0) lost to Chetana (4) 0-4.

MLWB pip Jai Ambe

Maharashtra Labour Welfare Board (Andheri) beat Jai Ambe 2-1 in the MDFA-conducted Division I-A league football tie at the St Xavier's ground, Parel, today. Valentine Gonsalves and Clint D'Souza scored for MLWB. Mahesh Newale reduced the margin. In the Division III-B match, De-Ablers beat Jyoti Dadar Boys 3-0. Amaresh Kulkarni, Samir Laud and Arijit Shetty scored.
