HC wants harassment probe

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Aug 12: Justice H L Gokhale of Gujarat High Court on Wednesday directed the director general of police (DGP) to call police sub-inspector V A Patel of Navsari police station, Sonal N Valand and Ilias Yunus Mohammed Memon and inquire into the allegation of petitioner Sonal that she and Ilias were beaten up by Patel. The DGP was directed to submit report to the court preferably within four weeks.

Sonal had alleged in her petition that she and Ilias work at the same place and are in love with each other. They had gone to Ajmer and Jaipur some time back. From Ajmer, both were taken into custody by Gujarat police on July 26 and brought to Navsari the next day. While she was allowed to go home by mid-night, Ilias was kept in custody. The petitioner sought protection to her and Ilias and the DGP to inquire into the episode.

On August 4, the court permitted Sonal to stay at State Home or Women, Odhav, and later shift to Vikas Gruh, Paldi, here. When the court asked Sonal and her mother Lalitaben, both said that the girl should be allowed to stay with her mother at Navsari. The court gave permission for this, but the petitioner expressed apprehension that she will be pressurised as she intends to marry Ilias.

But police inspector Chandrakant Gandhi, Navsari town police station, submitted that protection has been provided at Lalitaben's residence and assured that protection will be provided at the garment shop where Sonal works. To the petitioner's request to provide police protection to Ilias, the court observed, judge (of trial court) will arrange for police protection when Ilias is released. Ilias is still in police custody in connection with a case filed by Sonal's mother.

The court observed that it issued direction to DGP in view of submission of Haroobhai Mehta, counsel for the petitioner, that some organisations opposing inter-religious marriages are trying to whip up tension in the society.
