Toll in Maharashtra monsoon touches 50

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AURANGABAD, Aug 14: The toll due to the rain fury in Marathwada has risen to 50 over the last fortnight, with nine persons being killed over the last four days. Though there has been a lull in the monsoon since the last two days, the worst is not yet over.

About 43 of the 59 tehsils in the region, comprising seven districts, have recorded rainfall above the danger mark of 65 mm on several occasions while some have gone well above 120 mm.

Damage to private property, though very extensive, has not yet been calculated, though the loss to government property, mainly roads and irrigation projects, is estimated at Rs 20 crore, Deputy Commissioner, (Revenue) Umakant Dangat, told The Indian Express.

Of the 50 persons who have died, 13 were from Pharbhani district, 11 from Jalna, 8 from Nanded, 4 from Beed, 6 from Osmanabad, 5 from Aurangabad and 3 from Latur. The next of kin of the deceased has been given ex-gratia of Rs 50,000.

The monsoon has been relentless in Nanded and Parbhani districts, which isnot unusual, but Jalna and parts of Beed districts, where rainfall is generally poor, have also not been spared. Osmanabad and Latur are currently undergoing a dry spell in some of their major tehsils.

Of the 43 tehsils which have recorded rainfall above 65 mm over the last three days, 5 are in Aurangabad, 7 in Jalna, 8 each in Parbhani, Nanded and Beed, and 4 in Latur and 3 in Osmanabad. About 500 people have been evacuated to Kannad tehsil in Aurangabad and Hingoli in Parbhani.
