Deadline is media's baby, not mine, says Jayalalitha

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CHENNAI, Aug 14: Former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha has said it was the print and electronic media which set deadlines for the BJP-led coalition government at the Centre and not her party, the AIADMK.

``So far, I have not served any ultimatum on the government and it is only the creation of the media. It is not my intention to attack the Centre or impede its performance. All my statements, meant for the welfare of the people, are only aimed at improving the Centre government's performance,'' she said in a recent interview to a Tamil weekly, Kumudam, appearing in its latest issue.

Replying to questions on wide-ranging subjects, she said the Central government had adequate proof on the intrusion of terrorists and on the conspiracy being hatched by foreign forces. ``The Home department has all the evidence,'' she said.

To a question on what quality she appreciated in her bete noire and Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi, she replied: ``His oratory and his ability to wield his pen inchaste Tamil.''

Jayalalitha said the requisite importance was not being given to women in the society now. Though women formed nearly 50 per cent of India's population of 98 crore, they still had to fight for reservation in Parliament and Assemblies.

``I am deeply concerned that the Bill providing for 33 per cent reservation for women has not yet been passed. Male members in other parties are only offering lip sympathy to this cause, as they dislike reservation to women in their heart of hearts.''

She recalled her decision to give tickets to many women for the State Assembly elections held in 1991 which saw the election of 30 women on AIADMK ticket alone. ``Never before has such representation been given to women by any party.''

``I also put an end to girl child deaths by evolving suitable scheme and also started all-women police stations in 57 places,'' she said.

What did you lose when you became a national figure, she was asked and pat came the reply, ``mental peace''.

She said she was demandingthe resignation of Karunanidhi on moral grounds to come clear on the Jain Commission's observations against him.

In yet another development, Jaya said she was in no way involved with the recent transfer of some Central Government officers and asserted that there was absolutely ``no truth'' in press reports to this effect.

Without mentioning any names, she said that there were no FERA cases against her.

Denying the reports, she said the reports had said these transfers were effected to ``please me'' and that ``I am facing several FERA cases'' filed by the Enforcement Directorate.

(Newspapers today carried reports from Delhi that the Enforcement Director M K Bezbaruah, had been transferred to the Delhi administration as Transport Commissioner in the rank of Principal Secretary).
