George clinches "face-saver" in Chennai

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
CHENNAI, Aug 14: Defence Minister George Fernandes has once again met All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) supremo J Jayalalitha at her Poes Garden residence in what appears to be a last-ditch attempt to ensure the continued support of the AIADMK-led Front to the Vajpayee Government at the Centre.

The details of the talks held this evening between the two leaders were not immediately available.

Meanwhile, Union Law Minister M Thambidurai, who is from the AIADMK, refuted Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary M Venkaiah Naidu's claim that the Union Cabinet discussed the new draft scheme on the Cauvery issue before notifying it.

Talking to newsmen at Karur, he said the issue was not in the agenda of the August 7 Cabinet meeting and it was not discussed. ``Naidu did not know what transpired in the Cabinet meeting as he is not a Cabinet Minister,'' he added.

Thambidurai said Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Jaswant Singh had mentioned about the scheme during the Cabinetmeeting.

``But, we demanded that it be discussed in a separate Cabinet meeting,'' he said, averring that there was no mention about the new draft scheme in the meeting.

Adding to the chaos, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy today said in Tirupati that Jayalalitha would take a final decision on continuing support to the BJP-led Government at the Centre on August 16.

He said Jayalalitha was a shrewd and independent person capable of taking a decision which would safeguard the interests of Tamil Nadu and the country at large.

He said the Vajpayee Government could survive only because of the support of the AIADMK-led Front, and alleged that the Centre had utterly disregarded the interests of the people of Tamil Nadu on the Cauvery water issue.
