Commonwealth Games matches not "official"

SAIBAL BOSE
CALCUTTA, Aug 14: The International Cricket Council president Jagmohan Dalmiya informed today that the Commonwealth Games cricket matches to be played in Kuala Lumpur in September, will not be accorded official One-day status.

Explaining the ICC stand, Dalmiya said some of the countries playing in the tournament do not have the status of official One-day playing nations, thus forcing the ICC to decide against recognising the One-day matches as official.

Hosts Malaysia among others, do not enjoy the status of official One-day playing country. Jamaica, Barbados and Antigua, which play under the banner of West Indies, will compete in the Games as separate teams. The president, however, clarified that the matches will be conducted as per the ICC rules and regulations. The ICC will depute umpires and referees from its panel.

The Commonwealth Games Federation and the organisers of the Games had requested the ICC that they be allowed to include cricket in their schedule. The premier body for cricket, whilegranting permission, had made it clear that this would be only be on a trial basis and this does not mean that cricket will automatically be on the schedule in the next edition also.

The ICC assisted the Games Federation in preparing the grounds, the turf, wickets and also in selecting the teams that would participate. According to the agreement between ICC and the Commonwealth Games Federation, the individual boards will have sole right to select their teams.

As per the Commonwealth Games rules, the ICC also agreed to ensure that only the manufacturers' logo is sported on the garments of the players. The Games Federation will not pay the cricketers although the organisers will arrange for bed and board. However, an official of the BCCI, in his recent visit to Calcutta, had said some payment will be made to the Indian cricketers who play in the Commonwealth Games.

Dalmiya added the ICC sees it as an excellent opportunity to globalise the game.

The decision not to accord One-day status to the matcheswill, thus, paves way for the Board of Control Cricket in India to send a weaker team to Kuala Lumpur, reserving the best for the Sahara Cup.

While not wanting to comment on the BCCI-IOA wrangle, Jagmohan Dalmiya, the ICC president, said there appeared to be a communication gap between the Indian Olympic Association and the Commonwealth Games Federation. He felt that things will be sorted out once the IOA gets ``guidance and clarifications'' from the Games Federation.

The IOA wants the best Indian cricket team for the Games, while the BCCI is yet undecided about the composition of the team.
