Bagga and Trupti justify billing

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Aug 14: Top seeds Rajeev Bagga and Trupti Murgunde reigned supreme in the Maharastra State Selection Badminton Tournament, winning their titles in contrasting styles at the PJ Hindu Gymkhana here today.

Bagga doused the fire and exuberance of second-seeded Vikrant Patwardhan, winning 15-8, 15-8 while Trupti hardly broke sweat in her 24-minute victory over Meenakshi Wagh 11-6, 11-3.

Rajeev Bagga with his ability to retrieve almost anything and his vast reserves of energy was facing an aggressive rival. Patwardhan's pace and power were too much for many of his earlier rivals but it met with appropriate response from Bagga who tamed his young opponent. Bagga, who had lost in the final of the State Selection tournament to Nikhil Kanetkar, at MIG Club, Bandra, kept the shuttle deep on Patwardhan's backhand and forehand denying any chance to smash. That Patwardhan won only five points using his main weapon speaks for Bagga's smart tactic.

Then when Patwardhan used the net dribble in the first game towin many points, Bagga, almost teasingly, invited him for more such duels in the second game and came out a winner in almost all of them.

Bagga, whose concentration when winning rather easily tends to drift away, was amazingly focussed. He also looked totally in control of the match and dictated the pace rather than allow Patwardhan to have his way.

Bagga jumped to a 11-2 lead in the opening game before allowing Patwardhan six points (8-11). Most of Patwardhan's six points came through dribbles and a couple of smashes.

Bagga wrapped up the game there after. In the second game, Bagga once again got a good lead (7-3) before allowing Patwardhan to draw level at 7-7. But from then on, there was no stopping the two-times National champion as he conceded only one more point and won the match in 34 minutes.

Unseeded Meenakshi Wagh almost never seemed to exist for top seed Trupti. Whatever points the 23-year-old Meenakshi -- playing her first major final -- earned, were largely through unforced errors byTrupti, who had won the first State Selection tournament at MIG Club, Bandra.

The match itself was insipid and not one rally lasted more than 10 strokes. Bagga completed a double by winning the doubles title in company with Milind Ghate 4-15, 15-13, 15-12. After losing the first game, Bagga-Ghate staged splendid rallies in both the remaining games, winning from 2-8 and 2-7 respectively.

Trupti's chance of winning a double was dashed by the pair of Sim Sim Salaria and Kranti Sane who won 6-15, 15-5, 17-14.
