Simi Mehra revels in wind, joint fourth
LYTHAM, Aug 14: There have been, in the long history of such things, better birthday presents than five hours spent fighting the wind and rain at Royal Lytham St Annes. But Betsy King, 43 on Thursday, would not swap it, for in the worst of weather, as drenching drizzle swept over the Lancastrian coast, she produced a round of 71, one under par, to share the lead in the women's British Open with her American compatriot Brandie Burton.King and Burton, who at least remained dry, were one ahead of the leading British challenger Trish Johnson, with Scotland's Dale Reid and the Indian Smriti (Simi) Mehra a further stroke behind. One under-71 for Ghei Gaurav Ghei had a one-under 71 while Vivek Bhandari played par in the second round of the Volvo Masters at Kuala Lumpur as rain disrupted proceedings at the Kola Permai Golf and Country Club, according to information received here today. Both Ghei and Bhandari are level par and are lying joint 20th. However, Uttam Singh Mundy and Amandeep Johl carded twoover 74 and three over 75 respectively. Arjun Singh, who had a two-under yesterday, could not finish when played was called at 1645 local time.
