Tata veterans pack a winner

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Aug 16: Tatas played a spectacular second-half to clinch the Mumbai Veterans' Hockey Association's (MVHA) over-35 hockey title at the St Andrew's High School, Bandra today.

After scores were level 3-3 at the lemon break, Mahindras could score only two more goals while Tatas slammed in seven to settle the issue. Mahindras, who had slipped past holders and organisers of the event, MVHA in the semi-finals, were found wanting in stamina and energy, not to mention that the crowd seemed more in favour of Tatas.

A section of children -- in particular -- egged on former international BS Kuitappa, their coach and a former international. The ex-great did not disappoint, scoring his team's first goal in the 12th minute, a splendid solo effort.

It was Mahindras, in fact, who started well, jumping into a 2-0 lead by the sixth minute. Tatas found their groove a little later but did very well till half-time when scores were level.

With the crowd -- comprising mainly of little children -- enjoying everymoment of the match, the second half was a goal-feast.

Tatas slammed in four consecutive goals to go ahead 7-3 and after Reginald Pereira sounded the boards for Mahindras, Tatas went on to smash in another three.

Olympian Marcello Gomes, who was brilliant in the semi-finals, scored the last goal for Mahindras, a small and insignificant consolation for a team truly beaten.

CP Appanna was the star with three goals for Tatas, with brothers Clarence and Gilbert Lobo getting two apiece. Nasir Khan made his presence felt with two goals, adding to the four he scored in the semis.

Former greats of Mumbai hockey, Olympians Balbir Singh, Gurbux Singh, Kulwant Arora and Joe Antic were honoured at the end of the event. Results
