Kannan, Uzma win National Jr titles

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CHENNAI, Aug 16: Vijay Kannan of Delhi and Uzma Khan of Andhra Pradesh bid farewell to the junior section in tennis in triumphant style, retaining the boys and girls under-18 titles respectively in the IOB National Junior Hard Court Tennis Championship which concluded here this evening.

Both finals were one-sided affairs, each hardly lasting an hour. While Uzma Khan scored a 6-2, 6-1 win over Maharashtra's Radhika Tulpule, Vijay Kannan, with a variety of shots in his armour, defeated Sanzaruz Zaman (West Bengal), 6-2, 6-2.

It was the third successive title for Uzma Khan and second in a row for Kannan, a Dhaita academy boy from Delhi. He will be leaving for the US next month to play in the US Open. Today he carried too many guns for Zaman. He covered the court swifly and won most of his service games at love and had six aces in the first set itself. Kannan led 3-0 and then 4-2 before winning the set with a break in the eighth game.

In the second, the rivals shared one game each before Kannan went on towin four games in a row. Zaman, however, refused to give up. He broke Kannan while the latter was serving for the match in the seventh. But Kannan took the eighth and the match when Zaman, serving 15-40, doublefaulted.

In the girls final, Radhika Tulpule committed silly mistakes at crucial stages. Uzma seemed to be having the edge on Tulpule right from the first game itself which the latter won on the second deuce. Uzma broke Tulpule in the third but Tulpule managed to make it two all.

Tulpule was then broken in the fifth and seventh games. She tried to wear out Uzma, but did not succeed. In between she slipped twice while rushing to retrieve and after that her movements were affected.

It was evident in the very first game of the second set that it would be an easy run up to the title for Uzma. Tulpule lost her balance at 15-40 and it was 1-0 for Uzma. Then on Uzma kept on testing Tulpule on both flanks to score points. Tulpule too passed Uzma but committed several unforced errors, to give Uzmavictory.
