COIMBATORE, August 16: Sixteen persons belonging to the banned fundamentalist organisation Al Umma have been arrested since Friday evening, according to police here.They said 15 members were arrested during search operations in different places in the city on Friday for allegedly extorting money in the name of the organisation. All of them were remanded to custody.
Another person was nabbed at Tirupur on Saturday evening on suspicion. He was being interrogated to ascertain his involvement in the February 14 serial blasts, they said.
Search operations were continuing in and around Tirupur following information that some extremists were allegedly camping in the town, police added.
