Killing of stray dogs begins todayThe civic administration begins its drive to eliminate sick stray dogs from Monday, Municipal Commissioner Girish Ghokale said on Saturday. Speaking at an Independence Day function at the BMC, he said the BMC will target only `mad' dogs. The BMC had announced that those stray dogs, which have `become a menace to the society and are also carriers of deadly rabies-disease,' will be taken to pounds and electrocuted.
President's medal for cops
Six city policemen, including two Deputy Commissioners of Police, were presented the President's Police Medal for distinguished service on the occasion of Independence day. Among the recipients were Deputy Commissioner of Police Datta Padsalgikar, who has been transferred from zone VII to the Intelligence Bureau and DCP A M Dahiwal, head of police wireless. The other medal winners are inspector Praful Joshi, currently attached to D B Marg police station, sub-inspector B S Palande, assistant sub-inspector R A Chouguleand head constable (no 15414) D B Lotankar.
