Stanislaus triumph with Bejoy

MUMBAI, Aug 16: Bejoy Maliakal's brilliance in the last 15 minutes won St Stanislaus, Bandra the under-16 Division I title as they beat St Anne's Orlem 4-2 in the Colgate-Palmolive sponsored Inter-Schools Football Tournament, at the MSSA-Castrol Azad Maidan today.

Earlier, St Michael, Mahim edged out Our Lady of Remedy, Borivli 1-0 to lay their hands on the under-16 Division II crown.

Down 0-2 at half-time, Stanislaus staged a brilliant rally to not only overcome the deficit but also emerge convincing winners. That three goals came in the last seven minutes underlines the intense nature of the contest.

If Bejoy hogged the limelight for scoring two goals for the winners, Sheldon Fernandes and Avalon D'Souza (one goal each) too deserved equal credit for their fine support cast. The strikers trio exhibited excellent skills while punching holes in the rival camp that fetched their school the title.

St Anne's couldhave excused for coming out with a upbeat during the break. For, they were sitting pretty with a 2-0 lead. Adrain D'Souza and Rohit Charles found the net once each within 15 minutes into the game.

However, after resumption, Stanislaus were a transformed lot. They changed gears to get into the attacking mode. Their efforts bore fruits, 12 minutes into the second session when Bejoy rose to the occasion by nodding in a Clyde D'Souza free-kick. Ten minutes later, Bejoy surged ahead to outpace two St Anne's defenders and climax his solo run with a neat placement.

Bejoy's brace swelled his personal tally in the event to 20, giving him the additional honour of being the highest scorer in Division I.

The hard-working Fernandes then complimented Bejoy's efforts by finding the target off a melee. Mid-fielder Avalon stamped his team's supremacy after Bejoy had put him the clear with a defence-splitting pass, seconds before the final whistle.

Stanislaus coach Cyril Gabriel was a pleased man after his lads'display. ``I was confident about the boys as we had a similar situation in the semi-final too. They really played their heart out and gave one of the best performances on this ground,'' was his compliments to the young achievers.

The winners fightback found appreciation even in St Anne's coach Joseph Monterio. While admitting that St Stanislaus were a better side, he had his faith in his boys till the final whistle.

Earlier, striker Hilal Khan led the honours in St Michael's first ever title victory. Hilal gave another fine display of his talent for the second day running. In fact, he was largely instrumental in finding the match-winner for his team. Showing fine body control he swerved past a couple of defenders before releasing the ball to an unmarked to Kunal Goda. The dimunitive mid-fielder paid a fitting tribute to Hilal's skills with a neat placement into the net.

Mission accomplished, Hilal then switched roles by assisting the defence.Oppenents, Our Lady of Remedy showed promise in the initialstages but failed to capitalise on it. Strikers Sibin Paul and Mangesh Shelar undid their efforts by holding onto the ball for long.

For St Michael's coach Raphael Vaz it was a victory of sweat and toil. ``This is an outcome of pure hard work by the boys. And every boy played for a win.''

For the Borivli outfit it was a disappointing day despite the presence of three bus-load of boisterous supporters carrying drums and horns. Coach Alex D'Souza lamented on a couple of referees' decisions for the loss. He, however, had some advise for his team saying: ``but the young boys should not get disheartened.''
