Teachers to boycott evaluation of papers

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Aug 16: Striking university and college teachers today gave a call for boycott of examination evaluation and re-evaluation work. A decision to this effect was taken by the executive committee of the Punjab Federation of University Teachers' Association (PFUTA) here today.

The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers' Union (PCCTU) is already boycotting examination work. The call by the university teachers would affect the re-evaluation work which has just commenced at Panjab University.

PFUTA has also decided to submit a memorandum to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on August 21 to request him to take up the cause of teachers with the Union government. Separate memoranda will be submitted by the teachers' associations of Punjabi University, Guru Nanak Dev University and Punjab Agricultural University. PFUTA will also launch a mass signature campaign addressed to the President for implementation of the UGC pay-scales.

In a press statement, PFUTA chairman N.S. Mann and co-chairman B.S. Nanda reiterated the demand for implementation of UGC scales.

Mann alleged that the government was being "dishonest" as the pay-scales being offered with effect from January 1996 were far lower than what was being advertised in newspapers. PFUTA condemned the Ministry of Human Resource Development for recommending two sets of scales for university and college teachers.

Meanwhile, the coordination committee of teachers has announced the holding of a seminar on PU campus on "Teachers struggle and higher education" in view of the ongoing agitation.
