CHANDIGARH, Aug 16: Donato Di Ponziano, chairman of Professional Golf Association of Europe's Advance Education Committee, will visit Chandigarh tomorrow. He is currently holding coaching camps for the Indian probables in preparation for the World Amateur championship and the Asian Games.The Italian coach will also visit the Chandigarh Golf Club along with his trainee Harmeet Kahlon. Besides training the top Indian amateur golfer Harmeet Kahlon, Ponziano has also imparted training to professional Amandeep Johl, also of Chandigarh.
The Chandigarh Golf Association would host a dinner in honour of the Italian coach, who is also the author of books `The Key to Modern Golf' and `Computergolf', according to association general secretary CSR Reddy.
The CGA will honour Harmeet Kahlon for his outstanding peformance as an amateur golfer of the country. The Union Government has recenlty acknowledged Kahlon's contribution by selecting the Chandigarh golfer for the Arjuna award.
The Italian Golf Federation hired Donato in 1982 to direct the National Golf School with the tast to educate and update all the Italian golf professionals. He is also responsible as technical coordinator of all the Italian national teams since 1996. The CGA official feel that Donato's visit would benefit the Chandigarh golfers.
Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Golf Association, headed by cricket Dronacharya Desh Prem Azad, has selected top Indian junior Parnita Grewal and budding Irina Brar to represent Chandigarh in the Southern India Ladies Golf Championship to be held in Chennai from August 19 to 22.
The selection was based on their performance in the first Chandigarh State Junior and Sub-Junior meet in last April, said Reddy.
Irinia-Sheena win: Fourteen-year-old Irina Brar, a class IX student OF vIVEK High School retained the Independence Cup, organised by Chandigarh Golf Club (Ladies Section), in partnership with Sheena Sekhon. They defeated Dimple Minocha and Giatri Singh. In the semi-finals, Irina-Sheena beat Madhu Brar and Pippa Singh and in quarter-final, the winners had ousted Jasmeet and Neelam.
