NEW DELHI, August 16: Defending champions City Club prevailed over last year's losing finalists Indian Air Force (New Delhi) 2-1 in a well-contested group A match of DSA-SAIL Senior Division football league at Ambedkar Stadium. The winners led 2-0 at the interval.City Club, consisting of several young players, dominated the proceedings from the start. And they were rewarded early in the match. On a move initiated by mid-fielders Harish Bisht and Joy Paul Raj, inside-left Shyam Kumar opened the scoring for City Club in the sixth minute. ten minutes later, referee Vijay Ram Dhyani awarded a penalty-kick in favour of City Club, following handling of the ball inside the `box' by IAF defender Sree Prasad. City defender Kamal Bhakuni converted the penalty-kick to increase the lead for the team.
In the second half, IAF made several attempts to break through the City defence. Their mid-fielders P. Mukherjee and jayant Das failed to encash on the couple of goal-scoring opportunities. In the 74th minute, IAF striker SKA Hossen reduced the margin when he scored off a pass from Jayant Das from the left flank. CIty Club's Pradeep Singh was shown the yellow card for an infringement as the game hotted up towards the closing stages.
With the victory, City Club have collected seven points from three matches while IAF (New Delhi) have just one point after two games.
Veterans' charity tie: Earlier, City Club Old Boys XI defeated DSA Veterans Xi 2-1 in an exhibition charity game. The proceeds of the match, jointly organised by DSA and Delhi Veteran Football Club, were distributed among Yusuf Baba, Bhiwani Banerjee and R L Sethi. Midfielder Sharifuddin and M S patwal scored for the winners while Jai Singh Saini (presently an SHO at IP Estate) reduced the margin for the DSA veterans team.
The match between Shastri and Indian Nationals could not be played on Sunday due to water-logging of the Ambedkar Stadium ground. The match will be played on Monday at 3 pm.
