Activists lathi-charged during chakka jam

JALANDHAR, Aug 16: At least a dozen persons received injuries when police resorted to lathi charge a mob of BSP, CPI and CPM workers here which had turned violent during a `chakka jam' in the City today.

The workers of the three parties blocked traffic in many parts of the City by forming human chains, setting up blockades and throwing burning tyres.

The situation took a turn for the worse when some agitationists reportedly indulged in stone pelting at passing busses near Dharmpura village on the outskirts and window panes of many busses were broken as some passengers received minor injuries.

The police cane-charged the workers who showered abuses on them and pelted stones at them.

SSP P S Gill also reached the spot and tried to defuse but the workers grew more agitated and police again resorted to lathi-charge.

Meanwhile, a report from Chandigarh said that C.D. Kambhoj, Punjab President BSP, Joginder Dayal, Secretary CPI and Balwant Singh, Secretary CPM thanked all the worders and Punjab Roadways drivers for making the `chakka jam' a success.

Amritsar: Activists jammed traffic on the G T Road for four hours in protest against inflation and police atrocities.Addressing the party workers, veteran Communist leader Mangat Ram Pasla held the Centre and state government responsible for the hike in bus fare, electricity tariff, school fees and prices of essential commodities.Rattan Singh Randhawa and Vijay Mishra also spoke on the occasion.

Nawanshahar :Hundreds of activists today blocked traffic from 10 am to 2 pm at Jadla, Kagnabet, Kathgarh, Kahma, Mehlaur and Barnala Chowk in the district. Addressing the rallies the leaders lambasted the Badal government for rampant corruption in the state and rise in prices of essentials.No untoward incidnet was reported from anywhere in the district.

Phagwara: Vehicular traffic was blocked at different places on Phagwara-Hoshiarpur road and at Hadiabad on Phagwara- Nakodar road, while protestors raised slogans against the Badal government. SDM Phagwara D P Gupta and DSP Pritam Singh kept moving from place to place to monitor the situation.

Moga: The activists held a big rally, took out a protest march and BLOCKED traffic at Subedar Joginder Singh Chowk for more than one hour. Hundreds of buses were strnaded on the Moga- Firozepur, Moga- Ludhiana and Moga-Amritsar road and not a single bus was allowed to move. The rally in the old grain market was addressed by leaders of the four parties who expressed grave concern over the increase in atrocities on dalits in the rural areas.

Patiala: Tarsem Singh Kamboj, district president of BSP rural unit SAID IN A statement that a large number of CPI and CPM activists along with thoses form his party put up a blockade outside the bus stand and later held a rally inside the bus stand.

The rally was addressed among others by CPI state secretary Joginder Dayal, BSP district president Tarsem Singh Kamboj, CPM leaders Ram Singh and Prem Sohal and office secretary of the BSP Amarjit Singh.

According to reports received here, traffic was also disrupted for about two hours at Nabha, Rajpura, Bhawnigarh, Samana on the Patiala-Sirhind road.

Gurdaspur: ABOUT a 1000 activists blocked traffic from 1 p.m.to 2 p.m. on the G.T. Road at Kahuwan Chowk here today.

Kharar: Vehicular traffic on Kharar-Chandigarh national Highway-21 remained suspended for about three and a half hours here this afternoon. The activists staged a massive protest dharna on the highway at the bus stand chowk here and held a rally.They raised slogans against the Punjab Government.

The leaders demanded that 200 units of power be given free of cost to each family in the state, rising prices of essential commodities be controlled, unemployment be checked and the recent hike in the bus fares be withdrawn immediately.
