JD against People's Commission

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
LUDHIANA, Aug 16: Punjab Janata Dal has taken strong exception to setting up of People's Commisssion by Justice (retd.) Kuldeep Singh, to enquire into human right violations in Punjab during the last one decade.

State convener of the party Harish Khanna yesterday observed that probe into human right violations during a decade of militancy would raise many questions rather than providing answers to the problem. Moreover, the authority of setting up such a commission in the presence of a democratically elected government was questionable, and helplessness of the government to openly oppose such a move was reprehensible.

Khanna went to the extent of raising doubts over the motive of retired Supreme Court judge Kuldeep Singh, which was nothing else but to embarrass the SAD (B)-BJP government.

``If Kuldeep Singh is so serious about the human right violations, why is he not equally concerned over more than 26,000 killings of innocent persons at the hands of militants in Punjab,'' he asked.

The JD convener called upon the state government to act and ban further proceedings of the commission forthwith because its continued existence was bound to flare up tensions and create law and order problem in the state.

Khanna also reminded the ruling Akali Dal of its pre-poll promise to set up a judicial inquiry commission to probe the terrorist violence, its causes and alleged overt and covert support extended to the movement by certain powers. The government should not backtrack from its promise and should grant the people their right to know the true facts, he added.
