ROHTAK, Aug 16: The alleged ``baby killer'', Ram Babu, 32, who was undergoing trial for raping and murdering minor girls of Bahadurgarh, of Jhajjar district, and was lodged in district jail here was murdered by another jail inmate yesterday night.Superintendent of jail D N Baniwal said Babu Ram and Om Parkash (the other accused) were lodged in mental ward of the jail. At 5 p.m. when the doors of the cell were opened, Om Parkash went out and brought a stone with which he hit Ram Babu while he was asleep. Ram Babu was given first aid and later shifted to Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences where he was declared dead. A case has been registered in Civil Line Police Station, the Jail Superintendent said.
According to Baniwal, Constable Ram Mehar has been suspended and an enquiry ordered ``convict numberdar'' who is supposed to keep an eye on the movement of convicts.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Anil Kumar has ordered an inquest in the whole case.
Ram Babu was arrested nearly two years ago. However, a year after his arrest cases of abduction of minor girls started again in Bahadurgarh. The modus operndi was similar to the earlier one.
Manju (7), was the latest target. Last year, on June 22, she was raped and murdered. On July 10, 1997, Shankar Kumar - allegedly involved in kidnapping and murder of Manju was arrested after he made an unsuccessful attempt to abduct another girl - Aarti - from Subhash Nagar locality of Bahadurgarh.
The then Senior Superintendent of Police, A.S. Chawla, had said that Shankar had confessed to having kidnapped and subsequently murdered Manju.
The question which had been raised then was - Who was the real baby-killer? The remains unanswered still.
