PUNE, August 16: The Independence Day flag hoisting function at the Council Hall, which was presided by Governor P C Alexander, witnessed a self-immolation attempt by a 45-year-old woman from Shindewadi village near Loni Kalbhor.Mangala D Lawande tried to set herself ablaze at the out of the Council Hall to protest against the alleged apathy shown by the police towards curbing the bullying tactics of her relatives while the function was going on.
Mangala poured two bottles of kerosene on her person but the policemen present there succeeded in preventing her from lighting a match. Later, she was admitted to the Sassoon hospital.
Mangala has recorded a statement with the Bund Garden police alleging that she took the drastic decision ``because the Loni Kalbhor police had adopted an apathetic attitude toward her complaints that some of her relatives were harassing her and her family over property matters for the last five years.'' Mangala also alleged that she had lodged several complaints at the Loni Kalbhor police station. She also stated that no action was taken even after she moved several applications before the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Divisional Commissioner, district collector and superintendent of police (Pune Rural).
The Bund Garden police have charged Mangala with attempting to commit suicide.
