EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, August 16: Timely help by deputy chief traffic warden Kaushik Shetye helped in saving the life of a five-year-old girl who was seriously injured in a mishap at Bhairoba Nala on the Pune-Solapur Road on Saturday.

Apoorna Amolik's pulse had apparently stopped beating after the scooter she was pillion riding collided with a State Transport bus. Kaushik, who resides nearby, rushed forth and gave her artificial respiration. He then shifted her to a nearby private hospital.

Later, Apoorna was shifted to another hospital where she is still undergoing treatment.

Apoorna's father Vijay Daniel Amolik (43) of Vaidwadi, who was also injured in the mishap, has also been admitted to a private hospital in Hadapsar.

The ST bus collided with two scooters, a motorcycle and a cycle after its brakes failed near Bhairoba Nala around 1.15 pm on Saturday. Five persons were injured in the mishap.

Besides Apoorva and her father, the injured include scooterist E P Punswamy (45) of Ramtekdi, motorcycle rider Mohammed Tayyabali Electricwala (52) of Kawade Road and cyclist Rajendra Ramdas Bedre (32) of Hadapsar.

The bus was coming to Pune from Pandharpur when the mishap took place. Bus driver Laxman B Asale had applied the brakes to halt due to a snarl. However, the bus continued to move at a high speed. Baffled, Asale entered into the wrong lane and ran head on into an array of vehicles.

The Wanowrie police filed a case against Asale and arrested him.
